How Long Is a College Essay? Word Limits Explained

Word limits shape every college essay. Knowing the typical lengths — and how to edit toward them — saves you from last-minute cutting the night before a deadline.

The Common App personal essay

The Common App personal essay has a 650-word maximum and a 250-word minimum. The application will not accept text beyond the limit, so plan your draft with that ceiling in mind.

Most strong personal essays land somewhere between 500 and 650 words. Using most of the space usually lets you include both a story and genuine reflection.

Supplemental essays

Individual colleges set their own limits for supplemental questions. These are often much shorter — sometimes 50, 100, 150, or 250 words. Always check each college's current application, because limits can change from year to year.

Should you use every word?

You do not have to hit the limit exactly. But a response far below it can feel like a missed opportunity, especially for a personal essay. Aim to say everything that matters, then stop.

How to cut a draft that runs long

If your draft is over the limit, try these steps in order:

  • Remove the warm-up introduction and start where the story starts.
  • Cut sentences that repeat what an earlier sentence already showed.
  • Replace long phrases with shorter ones ("due to the fact that" becomes "because").
  • Check whether each paragraph adds something new about you.
  • Read it aloud — padding is easier to hear than to see.

Length is not the goal

Readers remember clarity and voice, not word counts. A focused 550-word essay usually beats an unfocused 650-word one.
